If you've seen Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's motorcycle travel series Long Way Round, you've probably had a moment of thinking to yourself, "Man, that'd be fun," even if you, like me, have never found yourself actually on a motorcycle. The kind of adventure touring that took those two on an eastward trip around the northern hemisphere in 2004 and southbound from Scotland to South Africa in 2007 isn't the kind of thing you just set out to do without experience but it's possible even if you're not a celebrity with a cameraman and support crew in tow.
I wanted to find out more about what this kind of travel involves so I had a chat with Andrew Kaupe, commericial insurance sales rep at a large Toronto brokerage firm by day, but longtime motorbike rider who partly blames Ewan and Charley for his own passion for adventure motorcycle touring. He'd been riding and racing motorcycles for many years but once his career got underway, he didn't have time to continue racing and shifted gears towards adventure touring, which combines his passion for bikes with a thirst for adventure.
"There is no turning back, there's nothing to turn back to," he says about the allure of travelling by motorcycle. "That's kind of defeatist, but your position is that you just want to go further. No matter what's in front of you, you have to find a way through it, you have to think, you have to navigate, you've got to really push, you've gotta want it."
California has become synonymous with stars, surf, sand—and high price tags. But the discerning tourist can experience the real California at a fraction of the cost by following these simple tips. It’s never been easier to keep your California dreams alive.
Be Book(ing) Smart
Travel aggregators like Kayak.com find the lowest fares by scouring scores of websites for the best deals. (But use Priceline.com if your dates are flexible.) Consider booking in the off-season (March to May; September to November) when crowds and prices decrease. Booking early, travelling midweek or flying in the late evening or early morning can also help reduce costs.
A State for All Seasons
The good news is you can visit any part of the Golden State depending on the type of luxury vacation you want. If you’re willing to forego the beach vacation, December to February can be your sweet spot: the desert has milder temperatures, and the mountains are ideal for skiers and snowboarders. More importantly, the cultural calendar is in full swing and lines will be at their shortest.

When I ask people to describe to me what they think about the territories that make up Northern Canada, I expected a response much different than what I actually got. Most describe the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut as “pristine”, “majestic”, “enormous”, “God’s country”, “stunning”. I rarely hear things like “cold”, “miserable”, “barren”, or any of the other nouns that one could associate with the North. One thing is for certain, it’s not the first place families tend to think about when planning their next vacation. While there are some specific challenges travelling with children to the arctic, it presents some equally unique opportunities and experiences that you will not find anywhere else.
Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut, covers about a fifth of Canada, and 85% of its population are Inuit. Almost the entire territory is tundra, and regularly see’s temperatures of -50C in winter, and “high’s” of 8 degrees in summer. While Nunavut is mostly Arctic tundra, the Northwest Territories has a milder climate and is mostly covered by boreal forest. It is home to the second largest park in the world (Wood Buffalo National park), and the best seat in the house for viewing the Northern Lights. Yukon rounds out the three territories that make up Canada’s pristine North. Here you will find Canada’s highest mountain (Mt. Logan), the world’s smallest desert, the Carcross Desert (which is not actually a dessert, but a sand dune), stunning glaciers, Kluane National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and beautiful sunny summers. If the sheer rugged beauty, pristine wilderness, world-class fishing and abundant outdoor activities aren’t enough to lure you, here are a few more reasons to take a second glance at our North for you next family vacation:
